Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups water, luke warm
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 5½–6 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 large apples, gala, honeycrisp, granny smith, or another tart and sweet variety
- 1/3 cup butter, melted, or very soft
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/2 cup karo syrup
- 1/2 15-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
Instructions
- In a stand mixer bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir well and let sit for 5-10 minutes until bubbly.
- Add melted butter, eggs, salt, and 2 cups of flour. Mix on low for 2 minutes until blended.
- Incorporate an additional 3½ cups of flour, stirring on low. You may need to add an extra 1/2 cup until the dough pulls away from the bowl. Knead on low for an additional 3 minutes.
- Cover the bowl with a towel and let the dough rest in a warm spot for about 30 minutes until it doubles in size.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and shape it into a rectangle. Roll it into a 24" x 12" rectangle, about 1/2" thick.
Notes
For best results, ensure your water is warm but not hot when activating the yeast.
You can use a variety of apples to customize the flavor.
